Shot over the course of two nights in New York Citys historic Beacon Theatre,SHINE A LIGHT(2008) plays like a relatively conventional concert film, albeit a blockbuster one with some giant names on the marquee. As the sole female presence amidst all this unchecked machismo, Amy Robinson holds her own as a force to be reckoned with as well as Charlies refuge from a brutal, cold world. Bernsteins lush, romantic score is quite fitting for a period costume drama, dovetailing quite nicely with Scorseses use of pre-existing, era-authentic march and waltz songs.
